Personal issues and problems, read my "Personal Notes series", concerning my health continues to bedevil me, and as I am writing this post I have just gone through another minor medical issue – this time not serious enough for me to seek medical attention. Now, I would have updated you (my readers) about this in my "Medical Emergency Updates", but since this was only a minor medical issue, I have decided that it simply was not adverse and serious enough for me to switch my focus away from what actually matters, in this case my readers and the letters that they have submitted to me, many of them containing questions that I will attempt to answer in this "Answering Readers series". Now, because I am somewhat compromised at the moment and because I lack sleep and also because I happen to be writing this post in the middle of the night, I must inform you that I may not be able to perform quite on the same level as I usually do; really, you could say that I am under the influence at the moment. I will still attempt to do my best here, but because of the special circumstances I am currently facing, I hope that you can bear with me in this post, as it may be more rambling and meandering than usual. I should also add that, I normally do not write these blog posts during the nighttime, as I am asleep during most nights, but because of this minor medical issue I am not able to sleep at the moment, and so I have decided to take the opportunity, now that I am feeling a little bit better, to write this post, where I will attempt to answer one of my readers very important question. Before I proceed, I should add that the medical issues that I am currently facing are minor and not life threatening, and that you do not need to worry about me, other than the possibility that my posts occasionally may become delayed due to this problematic circumstance in my life that I am currently unable to do much about, and yes in purview of this and the many blog posts that I have written about "Sacred Medicine", I must add once again that it is perfectly good and well to listen to the advise of medical professionals, especially in our current environment, where there are very few true practitioners of sacred and ritual medicine, and besides again, these things can tend to complement each other more than they oppose each other. So, if you end up in a medical emergency, you should obviously listen to the prudent advice of your doctor, unless you have a good and more than plausible reason not to. So, yes I am really providing all kinds of advice here today. Perhaps it would be accurate to suggest that I am providing advice sideways, at any rate you may read more of my advice under the "Advice" label? Anyways, beyond being tired right now I am also experiencing some pretty intense nausea, something that certainly does not contribute to my writing in any positive way at least.
Now, to deal with the letter at hand... As usual I have a certain set of rules that I must apply to this post, in order to keep it somewhat consistent with the other posts in this series, and primarily those rules are: I will not reveal personal and privileged information that has been provided to me by my reader in their letter to me, such as name, unless the person signing their name on the letter has explicitly stated that I am allowed to reveal information of this nature; another and important rule that I may apply from time to time, depending of course on the context, is editorialize, that is to say I will sometimes find it necessary to edit quotations that I provide in this post, and I will mark such edits by the usage of two brackets ([text]), and further I will also sometimes not include whole letters as only certain information within the letter may be of importance, and again because including the whole letter could jeopardize private and privileged information that I have not been given the permission to share.
Now, with all that out of the way I can already state now, that there has been no need for me to editorialize the letter that I received, and because the letter was so short, I have also found no need to cut it short in my quotation below. Since I have been given permission to reveal the name of the man behind the latter I will proceed to do so. I should also add that since the letter was so short, no information more information has been provided to me than what was revealed in the letter, and this was mostly due to me being unable to keep up a correspondence with Mr. Ra Hanha, and due to this I am also not privy to his particular social context, which means that I may have to rely on conjectures in my response, but at the moment there is nothing more that I can do about this.
    Mr. Ra Hanha asks:
"Hello Mr. Dutt, I have a question to you regarding how I should approach the marriage of my brother. You see, he is marrying a woman from a different tribe. Should I condone this marriage or should I condemn it, in the name of tradition and Goddess Devi?" — Ra Hanha.
There was no need to editorialize this letter, for the third time; so, everything that I have quoted above is accurate. I must also say that I am delighted that so far no-one who has submitted letters to me has wished to be anonymous; of course, you can be anonymous and for the most part it does not matter whether or not your name is revealed.
Mr. Ra Hanha, you appear to be asking about your brother marrying a woman, but since you did not provide too much information and since I have been unable to engage in further correspondence with you, I will have to, as I stated above, engage in a certain amount of conjecture here: it is my estimation that you are Hindu, that your brother is Hindu, based partly on your name, and it is also my estimation that your brother is about to enter into a marriage with a Moslem woman. Now, if this all is true, then you are quite rightly scandalized by this marriage, as it violates communal tradition, and in the case of the woman her Islamic principles Fiqh (فِقْه). What we are also not considering here is whether or not she is a virgin, and whether or not her family, her father, approves of this marriage, and then we have also not begun to consider her status as someone who exists outside of the caste system, because it is also my conjecture that you are of likely Indian origin and that you belong to one of the many branches of Hindustani Paganism (). All of these things indicate to me, if they are true, that you indeed would be right in approaching your brothers marriage to this outside woman with a great deal of circumspect and suspicion, as this is a marriage that likely stands in rebellion with the Hindu and the Islamic traditions, read "What is Tradition?"; and another point that must be considered in this context is the potential wrath of her family—her fathers and brothers, depending on her communal tradition—now that the word of Allah (الله) is being effaced so blatantly, which is something that could spark a major and tremendous uproar in her community and in your own community, because after all it is the experience of most peoples living side by side with Islam that the wrath of the damsels father is great and unforgiving, at least in certain contexts such as tribal Pakistan, or what many Westerners refer to as "tribal Pakistan", as if Pakistan somehow consists of parts that are more "tribal" than other parts, but I should admit that due to the continual usurpation of spiritual authority by the state, read "Temporal Power", that the country of Pakistan is very bifurcated; now, if this constitutes "tribalism" seems much more speculative and subjective to me at any rate.
At the end of the day, I would suggest that you would do right in condemning this marriage for a couple of reasons: in order to protect your and your families sacred honor, as well as your communal and social honor, as you and your father is going to have to live with this marriage otherwise, as well also in the context of a falling countenance in your community; you would also do right in condemning this marriage, as the family of the bride likely will not approve of this marriage—again this is my conjecture—and if you do not clearly condemn this marriage, you may also become subject to this aforementioned wrath; you would also do good in condemning this marriage for the sake of your Mother, who likely did not raise you and your brother in order that you marry outside of your community, in this case a Moselm woman; and you would also do good in condemning this marriage by either attempting to convince your brother to not go on to marry this woman, or by simply shunning him from your family and from your community, essentially condemning him to live in poverty, or forcing him to become a convert to Islam, something that will not necessarily solve the question of the sin still ongoing. Of course, the situation that you are currently experiencing is one of Multiculturalism, and Mr. Ra Hanha I can assure you that you are not the only person going through this situation, as these kinds of sorted lifestyles are being embraced all over the world, with the epicenter in the Western world.
Now, whether or not this is a question for the Goddess Devi to resolve is quite frankly not something that I can provide an answer to, other than admitting here that yes, Devi may manifest herself in divine vengeance, and often through the metaphysics of crime. Now Mr. Ra Hanha, you must go on your merry way, you must proceed to do what must be carried out in the name of justice and in order to balance the scales of the celestial order, for the Creator (ब्रह्मन्) wills it, read "The Will of God".
