Electricity powers the world and enabled me to write this post in the first place; electricity powered the lamps and the speakers on that Minaret featured in the picture to the right. Yes, without electricity life would seem empty and void of many of the things that people may take for granted here in our 21st century, in our modern civilization. Now, electricity may seem quite mysterious to most people, and indeed, I believe that it is quite fair to describe electricity as "mysterious", because what we are dealing with here is something that is hidden from our purview, because it exists on a level below the material level, on the level of particles and even on the level of subatomic particles. Yes, in that sense it would be quite fair to describe electricity as mysterious and even magical, but this would only apply to the extent that we consider electricity a very low form of magic. Now, the word "magic" does not require any kind of specification, and so I will grant electricity that label, magic, but I will add that this kind of "magic" is very different from higher forms of magic, qualified magic, forms that we have not seen, indeed that humanity has not seen, for multiple centuries, and indeed it is also true that magic was one of the first forces of nature that was uncovered by the proponents of the so-called "enlightenment", and since then the world has not been the same, read "The End of History".
    What is electricity? Well, according to profane science, electricity is essentially a kind of netto movement of a charge; netto referring to a some kind of difference in potential between two points, and this is what is referred to as a "current", and that difference in "potential" is what is referred to as "voltage". Now, these things tend to be more complicated in practice and in theory, but essentially this is what happens. The term voltage is in itself even more complicated, but most people are told to visualize a flow of electrons, electros being negatively charged particles, and this is one way of conceiving of electricity, but in reality there are many other "charged" particles out there, but in practice, at least within the purview of non-hidden matter, a topic that I will return to later: these particles includes protons, ions, and even that strange thing called "antimatter". Now, what is antimatter and how would that electricity work? Well, I am not a physicist and I cannot provide an answer, but it could be theorized that such electricity could, again in theory, work like normal electricity but in a reversed way. Anyways, when we only concern ourselves with "normal matter" or "revealed matter"*, we would generally only need to worry about the flow of electrons, since these are the only particles that are in play, even when we consider ions, because after all an ion is either positively or negatively charged based on its balance of electrons, and it should be quite telling that it is metals that more often than not tend to "give away" one or more of their electrons to non-metal particles; now, this has to do with the inherent physics of particles and it lies beyond the scope of this post to get into that, but all that you need to know is that even though ions are charged particles, they can only be so due to the particular configuration of its electrons. When it comes to protons, it appears to be a rare occurrence for them to ever be in play, as they tend to exist at the atomic core, and even when we consider radiation, such as alpha radiation they still carry with them their so-called neutrons, but these "alpha particles" would constitute the only instance of a positively charged particle that does not exist in some kind of arrangement with electrons. This leads us to be able to conclude with some confidence, that there should be far more negatively charged particles in the "revealed" microcosmos than positively charged ones, which is why electricity tends to be of a "negative flow", even though the scientists who "discovered" electricity really believed their flow was positive, which is why electricity seems to travel in the opposite direction from the electrons.
    This complexity is more complex still, and is one reason why we might conclude by saying that indeed, electricity is complicated because it exists on the level beneath the corporeal level, and the further one undertakes to dig below the corporeal surface, the more complex the whole matter tends to become. Of course, it is often taught to children in schools, that the American Benjamin Franklin "discovered" electricity when he flew a kite with some kind of metal attached to it during a thunderstorm, and while this account may or may not be accurate, it is wholly foolish to believe that Benjamin Franklin, or anyone else for that matter, "discovered" this force, and really the first recorded account of what we may today call a more primitive form of electricity was made by the Greek philosopher Thales (Θαλής), who described "static electricity", which is really as simple as a charge moving from one object carrying a certain potential to another object carrying a certain negative potential in relation to that charged object; the best example of this would be what happens to your hair when you rub a balloon against it: your hair carries more charged particles than your balloon, and when you rub it against the balloon, the balloon is essentially charged, while your hair actually loses charge, and as a result your hair is moved away from a certain electrical equilibrium compared to your environment including the rest of your body, and so your hair essentially reacts and stands up, until the old electrical equilibrium is reached again. But again, the idea that something can be "discovered" that has always been here is quite silly; it was not so much a matter of "discovery" as it was an observation, often made in passing, and perhaps even a certain description of one of the natural forces defining the corporeal world.
    There is of course a more narrow kind of electricity, one that is really much more significant to us and to our world, but again the purpose of this post was not to recite the science of electricity. Really, the point with this post was to ponder, for a while, about electricity and its effects on the world. Now, as a force and as I stated above, electricity has always been there, but electricity like fire is one of those things that we may now say was conquered by man and made into something completely different from what it otherwise would have been, and this can be said to be for better and for worse. Consider the fact that it is very hard to clearly see the planets and the stars in the sky above any populated settlement in our world, and this is surely one immediately obvious and adverse effect of electricity. Yes, electricity powers our houses, our many devices, the internet, and even parts of our body, but to what extent? To what extent should we allow ourselves to rely on this subatomic force, this force that we may only postulate and theorize about? This is the real question, and this question concerns not only electricity; this is a question that concerns everyone who wants to consider these matters for what they are, and hopefully this includes you.
