Medications, medicine, and curing diseases, are on my mind, again, and for a good reason, and I suppose that this is not the first time... At any rate, today people are taking all sorts of medications for conditions that are diffuse and abstract, almost bizarre to say the least. Take the issue of psychic conditions that people receive medications for: why are they taking medications, are the medications supposed to actually cure anything? Of course, more often than not these kinds of medications, again particularly when it comes to the mind, are taken never to cure the conditions at hand, but to treat the condition at hand, because profane science has deemed that the condition while not being terminal, is still rather incurable and chronic, and to mention of example of this we would do good by studying such things as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). What is ADHD? Well, notice the term "disorder" and its cousin "disability", for in the name already we have been made aware of the seemingly chronic nature of the condition. Well, alright this is just as well I suppose, but I suppose that a condition such as ADHD that is claimed to be chronic, must be able to bear some scrutiny? If it is the case that a condition is chronic but not terminal and therefore cannot be cured, it would seem logical that one should at the very least attempt to treat such a condition, but the question that has to be raised when it comes to these conditions is this: if this condition is not terminal, that is, it is unlikely to kill the person suffering from it, what then are we treating, are conditions such as ADHD really disorders, or are they perhaps something else completely? Again, apparently many of these conditions have to be treated and managed, but why? Some would argue further still, that in fact conditions such as ADHD are not worthy of treatment for they do not constitute something quite abnormal, something that is so apart from the human condition that treatment is called for; in fact, many of these people would go as far as to claim that ADHD is a "natural variant" of the human condition, but that people who "suffer" from this disorder are simply misplaced in the modern world. In fact, some would attempt to make this argument from a naturalist and evolutionary point of view, often arguing that since these people are around, they must have survived the "test of time" for the reasons that their condition is not bad enough to have brought them down to the pit, and even that this condition, consider ADHD again, could have proved some survival benefit, read "Naturalism and Its Confused Opponents".*
My intention with this kind of inquiry is not to take any particular position, because all I am trying to do is to understand what the point of these concepts are and why medications today are created at an alarming and increasing rate not in order to cure conditions, but rather in order to "treat" and "manage" conditions, and really conditions that I suppose are seen as undesirable or apart from the modern standard of living. It does also seem that these conditions, as I alluded to above, are almost invented, invented to explain why someone is misplaced in the world, rather than actually trying to figure out why more and more people are misplaced, read "Hierarchy". Is it not the case that conditions such as ADHD or GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) actually only exist to offer justification for the treatment and for the patient's apparent displacement in the world? Why are people anxious today? Is it perhaps due to the state of the world, or is it perhaps because there is something palpably wrong with them? And if, if indeed it is the case that there is nothing palpably wrong with these people, what exactly are they medicated for? Are they medicated just in order to bear with the reality of the modern world? In that case it would be quite accurate to describe this process, this lurid enterprise as a true pseudoscience, void of any true principles, material or not. I suppose that kind of statement would face much opposition and even uproar from the do-good proponents of the established order, but these people seem to exist for the purpose of themselves, as if they in and of themselves exist as a means to an end. Well, perhaps their own end? The individualism in this connection is astounding: I have to be labeled and sorted under the general heading of some disorder, some disability, all in order to claim my own personhood; for without this disability, I am not one with myself, and in turn the world. Yes, these people are misplaced, they lack a proper place in the world, but to call them disordered is missing the point completely. It would be appropriate for me to predict this now: people who have been labeled as disordered are disordered, but not in the material sense; these people are disordered in an intellectual sense, for they have essentially been robbed of their true standing in the world, and so they are now lost on the high seas, subject to the undercurrents of the time, really they have been reduced to a limit, a plankton floating in and out of the one moment to the next, read "The End of History".
This all is not to say that there cannot be such as thing as a "chronic condition", but I would venture to argue that a true disorder, a true disability, must meet certain objective and stable criteria: for one, a disorder must be a "disorder" in the true sense of that word, which means that there has to be some palpable and real misalignment or disequilibrium affecting the person's bodily functions or their mind; if this first criteria is meet, there must also be a functional treatment that actually solves the problem temporarily, and yes it has to be temporarily, not permanently, because if the treatment is permanent, it seems to me that we are dealing with a cure; and finally, a disorder must also be manifest either continually or perennially, because a condition cannot be something that sometimes happen whenever it seems appropriate or convenient. Again, these are some criteria that something that is called a disorder must meet, and this is only and merely a material, corporeal, consideration, but it seems that many of these conditions, conditions that are labeled "disorders", are merely inventions, nonsense figures, that serve to rationalize the current displacement of humanity and of tradition, read "My Views on the Unity of the Source".
