Sacred Food |

Sacred foods are profoundly important, and sacred foods have lost all their standing in this dope filled and disenchanted world. What would René Descartes say about food, if not asserting that it was a mere culinary tradition disconnected from the cosmos. What about the Kosher (כָּשֵׁר), the Halal (حلال), and the Vedantic food rituals (अन्नं ब्रह्मन्)? Well, in the mind of Descartes this would surely count for nothing, read "Artificial Intelligence".
Yes, the world has losts it enchantment, its wonder, and its connection to the divine, the book of nature has been made into an encyclopedia as opposed to a guide. Men have lost their sense of beauty and quality, and so we are left with a world that lacks any true sense of the sacred, which can make it rather hard to even attempt to write about issues of this nature, but my fellow dreamers I have been compelled, for this is my calling. Perhaps this is your calling as well? Now, when we consider sacred foods, I believe that a good place to start is to understand immoral foods, a subject that I have already described elsewhere, and perhaps another good start, at any rate from a biblical perspective, would be the fig, because of course the fig is profoundly connected to the culinary traditions of the Near East, to borrow that term from Descartes, or from his "brainchildren" I suppose. The fig is not merely used in the Bible because it is a common flower, yes figs are technically flowers, in the Near East, not at all, the fig has a important symbolical and may I add alchemical value, and one might even suggest, borrowing the logic of Descartes, that any other fruit or vegetable, maybe flower, could have been used in the Bible, but atlast the fig has come to symbolise the tree of life. This means that the fig is an excellent candidate in the making of sacred foods, especially within the purview of the Western and Near Eastern worlds, but yes we should also take other foods into consideration. What about the Okra in vedantic tradition? Well, I should first of all state that sacred foods are all very healthy, and yes it is sad that we should use healthy as an approximate estimation of sacred foods today, but do note that there is a strong correlation between sacred foods and healthy foods, healthy foods of course making up a lesser and provincial principle in this relationship; really, one may think of healthy foods as a degenerated derivative of once sacred foods. This all is why it should be no strange thing that mechanical and mass produced foods are associated with poor health outcomes, and this is just quite undeniable. There is a reason why green foods tend to be more healthy than foods without coloration, especially bland and homogenous and mass produced foods. So much is lost in translation when foods are commercialized and corporatized. Of course, a century ago, read "Mechanism", these commercialized and mass produced foods were considered a sign of progress. At least most people today have the sense to know that these foods can only lead down to the pit. Note however with some caution, that much of this modern antagonism towards the industrialization and the mechanisation of food is a sign of something else, the counter initiation, as some scholars would put it, but more on that at another time.
When we consider sacred foods we must also pay our due respects to the ritualistic nature of sacred food, for rituals in this context are profoundly important, just as they are in sacred medicine. When we consume sacred food, we partake in a ritual, the ritual of nature, and we become a part of nature, without attempting to exist apart from nature in some compartmentalized unit that has been misplaced in a wretched world, and in order for us to become enabled to enjoy sacred foods, we must liberate ourselves from this modern and individualistic notion. Why should we treat food as another commodity, and what do we lose when we refuse to see beyond our own narrowing horizon? There are a lot of problems with the world and with the ongoing climate change. Yes, all of these things belong together and they may not be compartmentalized and understood outside of the whole context, and this is perhaps why we should be especially prudent in listening to the many elders of the Shamanistic and Aboriginal cultures of the world, for their knowledge is about to be lost. Now, there are many things that are about to be lost, and again do not allow the counter initiation to fool you, because the corporate machinery will transform this healthy reaction to the aberrations of the modern world into a monster of its own, as it always does, read "What is Capitalism?". Now, you may say that it is already too late, and perhaps this is the case, read "The Eschatology of the Kali Yuga", but this alone does not mean that you should stop attempting to understand the concept of sacred foods, sacred medicine, sacred geometry, and really knowledge itself.
In terms of literature on sacred foods, it must be understood that most actions were carried out as a part of a ritual prior to the inception of the Cartesian world, and that almost no-one in, say medieval Europe, wrote books about "sacred foods" or conceived of the subject of these books as "sacred"; insead, we are made to rely on this label in order to distinguish between the legitimate and the counterfeit, counterfeit being the signal characteristics of the modern age, especially when it comes to cuisine, read "My Views on Multiculturalism". This all is not to suggest that any individual on his own should be capable of resisting the currents of our times, but it is at least to provide an alternative and mind you Traditionalist point of view on the matter of food, sacred food. You can be quite sure in relying on green and even vegetarian foods as a kind of mnemonic for sacred foods, but do be aware that this is not the equivalent of sacred foods; these foods are simply degenerated derivatives of sacred foods, but at least these derivatives can provide some insight, though corrupted. In that sense I should also warn that it is the case that completely ignorant and solidified persons may be better off as consumers, as much of this confused "new age" idealism will serve to create more confusion and damage compared to the materialist mentality.
No, I have not been able to create a list of sacred foods here, for this is not the intention of this post. If you do wish to educate yourself about sacred foods, then you must follow the teachings of a properly revealed and orthodox tradition, that is, again, staying clear of new age phantasmagoria.
