Inner Turmoil |
Thursday – September 10, 2026

Facing inner turmoil is always difficult, and in this post, this 9th part of this series, that is what I am going to explore. Of course, this may be a sensitive matter for many readers, and I can see why. I can also see why some people would gather that this is not a sensitive subject. Now, I should add that I have covered the issue of inner turmoil to a limited extent already in this post. I am making this post because I have decided to answer one of my readers' letters, and this particular letter is highly sensitive and highly personal, and because of this I have decided to reveal as little as possible about this person, but more on this later.
As you may or may not know, if you have been reading this series, I tend to write quite a bit before I get around to address the letter at hand, and so I will do today, although I will attempt to shorten the that (this) part. As everyone must know, who is reading this post, I have certain rules, and they involve mostly my editorial policy, meaning that whenever I respond to a letter addressed to me, I will attempt to answer the questions in the letter, if I find them to be important. Now, because I cannot control the letters people send to me, I will sometimes find it necessary to edit the letter at hand, that is portions of the letter that I end up quoting here, and sometimes I may not quote the entire letter for reasons of privacy or because the letter is too long. I will also not demand that anyone writing me letters should reveal their name if they do not wish to do so, because there is usually little reason for this. Sometimes, it may be necessary for you to provide certain privileged information about yourself if you wish for me to actually be able to answer your letter without engaging in too much conjecture, because there has to be some kind of reference that I can rely on in order to actually respond in a meaningful way to your inquiries. Now, if I do find a certain letter to contain information that is phrased in an offensive manner, it is my policy to essentially substitute that part or simply not include it, and if I do end up substituting some part of the letter that I quote, I will indicated this by the usage of two brackets, [text]. For the most part I have not had any reason to do this, except for once. It may also happen that I cut down my quotation of a letter if I find this necessary, and this I will indicate by three dots inside two brackets, [...].* Generally speaking, it is however not my policy to keep up a correspondence unless I find it necessary to ask follow up questions, again because I may be in need of more information.
In the current letter that I will attempt to respond to, I have not found it necessary to follow up anything, and really I have not found it necessary to engage in much conjecture, except perhaps certain details that I will arrive to later on. Again, if anyone wish to remain anonymous, it is perfectly good to write that you wish to be anonymous, but because of the number of letters that I have received containing a name, I will no longer assume the negative; if you wish to be anonymous, then you have three options: either you simply sign your letter with an alias (a pen name), you simply refuse to sign your letter with any name, or you simply ask to be anonymous; again, there is no need for you to reveal your name for the most part. I should also add that I may simply refuse to answer certain letters, often letters that are obviously not serious, and this is up to my discretion, and also because I do not have time to correspond with people, generally.
Now, to deal with the current letter at hand. This letter is written by someone who is not completely anonymous and not completely open about their name, and so I will address the person with their signed name, which is Alfred K. Again, this could be an indication that Mr. Alfred K. is unwilling to reveal too much of himself, which is understandable; after all this is the internet. Because of certain details in the letter, I have found it necessary to engage in some conjecture, specifically about this person's general whereabouts and his religious convictions, for without these conjectures, I could simply not respond to the letter in a meaningful manner. Before I deal with the letter, I should explain that the letter asks about sexuality and more specifically homosexuality, which are two often controversial and sensitive topics. Now, that in and of itself has not led me to find any reason to editorialize the letter, and because the letter is short and concise, I have found it appropriate to simply quote the whole letter on this page, without any more intervention on my part. I also wish to direct you to my post "Attraction", for more details about similar topics.
    Mr. Alfred K. asks:
"Hello Mr. Dutt, I have a question regarding my sexuality, because I am torn on it. I feel sexual attraction to my own gender (other men), and I don't know what to do? Should I reject this, because I feel that I can't help it? Is there a way for me to repent? Can I lose this attraction or must I lead a life of celibacy, as you suggested in a past post?" — Alfred K.
Well, Mr. K, it is certainly the case that I have recommended celibacy in the past, read more here, but celibacy in that sense had to do with embracing something and rejecting something else, really embracing a mode of being, a modality, over another, more specifically, over a material and lust bound modality, a modality that will make you sick and depraved. I should perhaps reiterate therefore, that this applies to all men, and was not meant to specifically indict the lifestyle of homosexuals. Now the matter of homosexuality is complicated and I simply cannot provide any answers in regards to the nature of this disorder, if we indeed choose to define it as a disorder, read more here. I can tell you Mr. K, that according to profane science, there is no cure to your condition, and I know of no cure in the realm of sacred medicine either, at least of no cure that could be made available to you at the moment. The issue with homosexuality is also one of identity: is homosexuality something that is part of your identity, that is, do you believe yourself to be homosexual? Another question in this regard could also be added: when you feel these attractions, do you believe that it is specifically towards other men that you find your attractions, or is it perhaps towards qualities and or other aspects that happen to be more common among men? If we indeed could establish that it is not specifically other men that you are attracted to, then we could perhaps attempt to further deconstruct your current condition.
You see, it is commonplace today for people to tell you, if indeed you are open about these feelings, that your feelings (your supposed homosexuality) is perfectly natural and common, and that you should embrace this and make the homosexuality a part of your identity, of who you are; indeed, for these people you are not just a man that happens to be attracted to other men, you are specifically a homosexual man, and to be a homosexual man carries all sorts of faculutes with it, and facilities that you may not really wish to identify with, read more about this in my post "What is Collectivism?". Because once it can be established that you are homosexual, you are no longer simply a man with an unusual or even deviated attraction, an attraction gone astray, you are now a member of a certain collective, and therefore you are subject to political objectification, read as well "Identity Politics". Beware of this political objectification, because it will affect you and it will change how you view yourself in relation to what you wish to be and in turn in relation to the world. Really, it would be accurate to say that once you yourself see yourself as homosexual, you are far more likely to fall victim to ideological indoctrination.
Now, that stated, we must then establish whether or not homosexuality in and of itself constitutes something so abhorrent, really an aberration, that it calls for you to change. First of all, I am relying on the political label homosexuality here, mostly because this would become too cumbersome otherwise, but again beware of that label. This is why I have made the conjecture that you are likely a member of a sect, and more likely a fundamentalist sect, and there are multiple problems with this, especially when it comes to practices claimed to be derived from doctrine.† It is also my conjecture that you belong, more specifically still, to a Christian cult, due to your pen name, and this means that you are likely not a Catholic or an Orthodox, but a Protestant, which in turn likely means that you have a bastard conception of doctrine. Yes, in your case it is true that the Bible states in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 that it is wrong for a man to engage in sexual intercourse with another man, specifically sodomy, and while this is true, there is also Church doctrine that must be addressed here, and certain historical matters of fact, such as the the difference between Far Eastern homoerotsicsm and Western homosexualty, and since you do not belong to a serious denomination, there can hardly be much of any Church doctrine to take into account here.
Again, whether or not homosexuality is wrong cannot always be answered in an easy and plain manner, because there is nuance here, but the first thing we must to is to separate action from lust: the action of sodomy is surely forbidden in your sect, and really in your society, at least this used to be the case, and indeed the experience of the HIV pandemic in the 1980's and the 1990's has shown this. This stated, nobody can truly lament that it is immoral for you to hold certain and uncontrollable urges, now what you do with these urges is what matters the most. While it is true that I have written in the past about the subject of homosexuality, I have only done so in order to explore that corner of the world, and I do again need to be clear that I in no way wish to engage in some kind of baiting; the history of the world shows clearly that yes, there have always been men with this certain inclination around us, but this does not mean that their condition is righteous. What this all amounts to is that yes, you do have the choice, the choice to repent, and indeed, this does probably mean that you either attempt to cease being attracted to other men, ot you simply lead a life of celibacy, that is if you are unable to function in the proper way, but this would apply as well to people under the influence of other disorders, and I suppose that it would be right to label homosexuality a disorder, for it is not suited for Western men. Yes, one could argue that men in the Far East are more suitable for this, and the primary reason for this is that Far Eastern societies tend to be oriented towards inner peace and contemplation, as opposed to action. Yes, you are unlikely to be suited for the homosexual life, and this means that you should seek some kind of remedy, but I should also clarify this, or really preface this, although a bit late for that now, by saying that the world will not end because you engage in homoeroticism, and here you must attempt to walk away from the fundamentalism of your upbringing, for it is simply misguided. While homosexuality will make you sick in the long run, by, among other things, draining you of your vital essence, there are many men out there leading sordid lives; quite clearly and frankly, we must reject the populism of this kind of gay baiting. Oh yes, you can repent, but I would suggest that you move away from your current faction and instead seek remedy among your fellow brethren in a different congregation, a congregation that actually has some decent respect for doctrine, which again is unlikely to be the case as long as you remain Protestant. Again, this is not to say that you should embrace the Catholic Church, but it is to say that yes, you are currently living a sordid life of sin, and you are simply more likely to find real support in a different congregation. Yes, you may be a man attracted to other men, and this is unfortunate, but as long as you do not let this side take over, you should be in the clear, and besides, you will face far larger problems in life, really in your condition.

Footnote(s)
* I should add that many, if not most, of the letters received thus far have contained the very annoying and disruptive newline character/break character. Because this characters creates issues, I remove all of them, but this is a cosmetic thing, that for the most part serves to not affect the meaning carried by all the other characters, unless we are dealing with poetry, and in which case I likely would refuse the letter, that is refuse to address the letter here at any rate.
Here I have found it necessary to direct you to my posts: "My Views on Fundamentalism", "The Hypocrisy of the Pious", and "The Puritan Fallacy". As they address these issues more in depth and in a manner that extends far beyond the scope of this post.
