Genesis, Chapter 9 |
Sunday – August 23, 2026
Names and lineage are important, read "Hierarchy", and they are certainly important in the Bible and in the story of Genesis, for they provide both an account and a connection; they help us understand our place in the world, and they bind us to this place, to each of our stations. Even if we consider ourselves completely autonomous and liberated from the story, from our story, this would still never be enough to escape, to escape the circumstance of each of our creation. It may be fancy to proclaim how each of us just "happened" to be born into our bodies and into our lives, but the fact is, read "Never Trust Your Body!", that each of us are here only because of us; you can not be someone else, nor could you have been someone else. It is not simply a matter of chance that you ended up being the person that you are. Be it millions or billions of years, read "The Archean Eon", that has passed, you are you because you could not be someone or something else, and this is perhaps the greatest account of them all in the Bible. You do not require the approval of the modern world to proclaim yourself victorious in the name of God and in the name of history, which is why you must not seek their approval, approval that will not serve to uphold justice at any point.
This will be the 9th part of this "Bible Study series", which means that there are 8 other parts of this series that you should read before reading this part. I will list each previous part in chronological order, and you should read this series in chronological order: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, and part 8. Now, this 9th part of this series represents the 9th link in this chain, and as I have stated in each post, at any rate in most posts, in this series: a chain depends on each link to keep it intact, and this is why it make little sense to jump into this series by reading only one part of it; quite frankly context does matter and since this is not a "Soap Opera" and since this also is not a "quick fix", you should attempt to discard all the modern confusions that may lead you down the wrong path. It is true that you can "jump in" on your own accord and that there in little that I can do to prevent this, but in that event, in the event that you should choose to read this part without the context of the rest of this series, then you will simply be remiss and you will be confused, which again is your problem to deal with; I believe that I have provided ample room for this crucial information now, read "Navigating the Informational Landscape". Of course, so far this series is covering the first book of the Bible, the Book of Genesis (בְּרֵאשִׁית) which consists of 50 chapters, which means that at this pace this part of the series will conclude somewhere in late May to late June next year, but I should add that there may come more interruptions that could delay this series further, and delays that I may or may not be able to control, read "Medical Emergency Updates" and my "Vacation series". Of course, this is after all my blog and it is up to me when and how I conclude this series, and while this may be a somewhat ambitious series, I believe that there is no reason to rush through the Bible. Now, as this series progress, something I will cover later, it may become necessary for me cover more than one chapter per part, especially when it comes to such things as poems and psalms, and it may actually become necessary for me to entirely skip certain passages of the BIble that contain psalms and poems for reasons of that they provide little useful information, at least for the purposes of this study, but again I will cover that situation as it arrives.
As usual, I will exclusively refer to God, the Creator, as Yahweh (יהוה) when dealing with each passage and each verse in the Old Testament, the Tanakh (תָּנָ״ךְ), because, again, the Tankah represents the sacred covenant with the nation of Israel and Yahweh, and while some people would assert that God of the Old Testament (Yahweh) surely is universal,* this alone does not mean that these scriptures should be understood as something that is universally applicable. Of course, most moderns cannot go a single day under the sun without feverishly and hysterically hoping for everything, including the Creator, to be made into something quite soluble and universal, something that can be absorbed by most maladaptives and most beasts, the lowest common denominator, read "Democracy".
Now, I will only rely on a certain publication of the Bible in this post and thus far in this series, namely the Catholic New Revised Standard (NRSV-CE), not because this publication of the Bible is superior to any other publication, but simply because it relies in a "neutral" and apolitical version of English. Of course, this "neutrality" is far from complete, but it is good enough in the purview of this study. I do also rely on different and secondary publications of the Bible, but the version that will be quoted and handled following these initial notes is the NRSV-CE, which is a somewhat politically correct publication, which is why I will substitute entirely the word "humankind" for "mankind", this will be indicated with two brackets, "[mankind]". If you decide to rely on a different publication of the Bible, then you are doing this also on your own accord, and it is therefore your responsibility to keep up with the subtle but important differences in each verse of each chapter. Now, this is not a hard ruel, which is why I may or may not suddenly start to rely on a different publication on the Bible.
Lastly, I will sometimes find it necessary in my quotations of these passages (chapter 9) to skip certain verses as they do not provide useful information for in this study, and I will indicate this by the use of three dots inside two brackets, [...]. This may indicate that there are passages preceding or following my particular quotation. Again, these are not hard rules, which means that they may or may not apply below.
Yet again, before we can proceed with the study at hand: if you have complaints about anything that I have written and asserted, then you are free to post them in the comment section below this post. I have received a few complaints so far on the official email attached to this page (etherealinsight@protonmail.com), but my policy is to only handle complaints in the comment section, as I have largely reserved other channels of communication for discussions of a more private nature, such as readers sending forward letters containing privileged information, etc. What this means is that I am unlikely to respond to an email complaint as I simply do not have time to handle them, nor do I have time to connect each complaint to each relevant post; simply using the comment section is the best and most straightforward option. This is not a hard rule, but it is a recommendation if you actually want me to respond; I also call on you to refrain from using offensive words in your comments. I should also mention again, that it is my intention of creating a separate page that will take care of all of the possible confusions and other important information to be considered in this study; that page is still not finished, and when it is finished I will simply link each post to that page in order that can skip having to reiterate all of this information in each of these posts, as I mentioned above.
✠ The Covenant with Noah ✠
Genesis 9:1 – 7:
[Yahweh] blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you shall rest on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and just as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life.
Whoever sheds the blood of a human, by a human shall that person’s blood be shed; for in his own image [Yahweh] made [mankind].
And you, be fruitful and multiply, abound on the earth and multiply in it.'

Now, Yahweh goes on to again command Noah and his family to multiply, and here we must also understand that it is quite implicit that this means that animals should be made to multiply as well, and this is the obvious reason why all animals brought onto the ark were male and female, and not male and male, or for that matter female and female, though this is a smaller issue generally speaking.‡ Of course, there are some very subversive people who would gladly and intentionally point out the seeming impracticality here, but we must then remember that we are still dealing with humans who were much closer to the primordial form, read "The Primordial Body". Most humans of today are simply evil mutants, and they are mutants and evil because their bodies and their minds are riddled with disease, the disease from the infection of modernity, or as some would say the so-called "enlightenment", even though this infection started far earlier than what today is considered the "enlightenment", but I must digress, read "My Views on the Enlightenment". Of course, verse 6 should be understood as a command, and again this is a significant command, indicating divine law over man and not the other way around, man's law over nature, read "The Problem of Secular Law". If you are a believer, read "Should You Have Faith", then you would do right in always following God's (Yahweh's in this context) laws before you followed any other law.
Genesis 9:8 – 17:
Then [Yahweh] said to Noah and to his sons with him, 'As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.' [Yahweh] said, 'This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between [Yahweh] and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.' [Yahweh] said to Noah, 'This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.'
First of all, allow yourself to note the new generations beginning of course with Noah, for the Ark should be allowed to represent a certain threshold between the old and the new, the last Sunday and the New Monday, the abyss and the heaven. Indeed, this passage makes it clear that from the heaven, death and destruction shall not be allowed to rain down on the earth. This is a covenant, a covenant of renewal and of rebirth, and indeed in this instance it would be logical to assume that life is anew on earth, and that all life from this very moment has sprung forth in the holy covenant with Yahweh-Elohim (יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים).§ This meant that all of the first generations, all of the first animals, birds and other creatures, where washed clean, which means that they too were close to the original and primeval form, although never as close as the first humans, Adam (אָדָם) and Eve (חַוָּה), and their immediate descendants, Cain (קַיִן) and Abel (הֶבֶל), noting here as well that Abel was murdered in the second sin. Nothing as well, that this covenant is established between Yahweh and "all flesh that is on the earth", which is quite significant, but for more on this I must direct you to my post "What is Animal Welfare?".
The cyclical nature of the periods and the rains can also be thought to be inspired by this passage, read "Divine Inspiration", but this may be more of a biome specific thing, and should not be confused with the overall covenant that really does not address this. It should also be noted that this covenant is not yet between Yahweh and the Nation of Israel, again this is something that appears much later, and is something that I intend to return to.
✚ Noah and His Sons ✚
Genesis 9:18 – 29:
The sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah; and from these the whole earth was peopled.
Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant a vineyard. He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and he lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, he said, 'Cursed be Canaan; lowest of slaves shall he be to his brothers.'
He also said, 'Blessed by the [Yahweh] be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave. May [Yahweh] make space for Japheth, and let him live in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave.'
After the flood Noah lived three hundred fifty years. All the days of Noah were nine hundred fifty years; and he died.
Surely this passage of the Book of Genesis can seem quite reprehensible to most people, especially in our times where the concept of slavery seems completely foreign, but the fact is that Ham (חָם) had committed a grave violation in the eyes of his father Noah and in the eyes of Yahweh, thus his son Canaan (כְּנַעַן) was cursed and made to be a slave.‖ Understand as well, that seeing your naked father was until fairly recently something that most people simply did not do, but today it is considered almost normal for children to walk around their naked parents, yet these people claim that the Bible and scripture is immoral and backwards? Again, and for another post: these people assume that this is somehow the "natural state", read "My Views on Reason". Let it be stated here: the natural state is not defined by men; the natural state must be defined in accordance with divine law and not in accordance with the natural and primitive urges of men.
Again, we are dealing here with distinguished men, men of the first generation of the post flood world, and men who entered into a sacred covenant with Yahweh (God), thus Noah lived "nine hundred fifty years (950). Just as Ham and his son Canaan were the stain of the first generation, the mutation of the first sin in the first generation, the first pathology in the new world, on the New Monday, and the shadow following the light, each man that followed were destined to fall victim to sin, disease, and above all deceit. Cyclical thought these things are, they are harmful yet parts of the human condition, for we are all defined by them, by disease and sin, deceit and manipulation.
You have reached the end of this part of the Bible, or rather my examination of the Bible. For more on this series, follow the label "Bible Study series". If you are interested in me, read my "About me" page and my "Who Am I" post.

Footnote(s)
* Again, this is a disputed point among scholars and something that I keep repeating. I simply do not seek to engage with this and I will not engage with this further. If you still seek more information about this, then I direct you to my posts: "Yahweh-Elohim" and "Proof of the Name of Yahweh".
† Now, this passage could be construed into making Yahweh, the God of the Old Testament, universal, but still I warn you to not construed these matters. For more on this, I direct you to my post "'Creationism'". Read as well, Genesis, Chapter 1.
‡ Here again I must direct you to my posts: "Should You Create a Family" and "Homosexuality!", as they will explain this matter in greater detail. It may seem quite obvious that this should be the case, but in our turbulent times, this is less and less understood and may I assert less and less accepted. I should add that female and female is less relevant here, and for more on this read "The Problem of Lesbianism".
§ Note again, that this covenant is different from the covenant between Yahweh and Abraham (אַבְרָהָם), a topic that I will cover later in Genesis.
‖ Again, we must understand slavery for what it was: slavery was not a matter of punishment only, it was a matter of putting certain people, certain men, into work, work that they were capable of doing. For more on this I direct you to my post "What is Love?".
